Other Publications
on Campus
By Richard Leader
While Generation
and The Spectrum can be found within eyeshot of just
about any spot on campus, there exists a plethora of other publications
at UB that you should definitely watch out for.
Visions magazine is the younger sibling of Reach--the
book you are reading now--and is produced monthly by your undergraduate
Student Association. Giving you the latest news on how your student
government is working for you, Visions is an invaluable resource for
every student who wants to know how his or her rights are being advocated
for, how student fees are being spent, what special events are going
on, and of what new services are available to students--as well as
the featured student athletes of the month. Visions is also
of particular interest to the members of campus clubs to whom it offers
free event advertising, as well as editorial spotlights on individual
clubs or its members. To get involved, visit the SA office at 350
Student Union or call 645-2950.
The Quill is the official monthly publication of the
Graduate Student Association and can usually be found wherever graduate
teaching assistants (TA's) have offices such as the upper floors of
Clemens. While in recent years, it was largely abused as a platform
for political infighting, it has now returned back to its roots and
promises to be a tremendous advocate for grad students. But that doesn't
mean that you undergrads should ignore it--it might be your future
that they are saving. The Quill currently accepts submissions
from all students and will even pay you a modest fee for your work.
Stop by 310 Student Union, or call 645-2960.

The Opinion is the newspaper of the UB Law School and can most
likely be found in O'Brian Hall or the Law Library. Less uptight than
you might imagine, The Opinion offers intelligent and
often irreverent editorials on student issues, the law, and society
in general. For more information, stop by their basement office at
7 O'Brian Hall, or call 645-2147. http://wings.buffalo.edu/law/opinion/
Ari is the Jewish student newspaper of UB and is affiliated
with Hillel with funding provided by the Jewish Federation of Greater
Buffalo. Serving the needs of the Jewish community, Ari offers
a wide variety of content from historical pieces and editorials to
film reviews. Submissions are always welcome, and staff writers and
editors may apply for course credit. If interested, call 639-8362,
stop by the Campus Center for Jewish Life at Suites 210 and 204 in
the Commons, or visit their web page at: http://wings.buffalo.edu/religious/ministries/hillel/ari/
The Buffalonian, UB's undergraduate yearbook is often overlooked by
students--until it is too late. Be sure to keep tabs on when the photo
sessions are during your senior year, or provide them with a picture
if you are going to be studying abroad. If you are interested in editing,
writing, doing layout, or photography--and want to get into something
that will put your high school yearbook to shame--visit their office
at 322 Student Union, or their web page at: http://wings.buffalo.edu/sa/yb/
The Reporter is the official newspaper of UB and is
published weekly by Division of University Services. It is distributed
all over campus--though sometimes it is mysteriously absent in the
Student Union, and can only be found near Filmore in Ellicott. Serving
up the administrations spin on upcoming events long before they actually
take place (or are written about by Spectrum Staff writers
trying to fulfill their writing requirement)--The Reporter
is a treasure trove of information and propaganda. With an intended
audience of faculty and staff, the professionally produced paper is
high on gloss, but should still be of interest to you, if only for
the tres useful calendar. Pay particular interest to the letters section
where you can often see professors and deans taking pot shots at one
another and duking it out like schoolyard kids. http://www.buffalo.edu/reporter/
UB Today is newer addition to the lineup, a seasonal online-only
webzine for UB alumni that is as high on glitz as they come but delivers
enough substance that you should not overlook it. Besides articles
on uber-expensive scientific doodads that UB has invested in--UB
Today features stories on interesting research, faculty, and alumni,
as well as various nostalgia pieces--and as an aspiring alumnus or
alumna, you owe it to yourself to check it out at: http://www.buffalo.edu/UBT/index.html
